Use the PEDI to measure both capability and performance by observing self-care, mobility and social function. To appraise a child correctly, determine functional skills in which mastery and competence are demonstrated. The PEDI helps the clinician identify treatment progress and recommends areas of new functional intervention.

Also, use it to identify functional deficits and establish treatment plans. The PEDI is standardised on a normative sample, allowing the calculation of both standard and scaled performance scores. To assist the clinician further, the manual offers helpful information on administration guidelines, scoring criteria, easy-to follow examples, instrument development and validation, and clinical trial data.
