The Autobiographical Memory Interview (AMI) provides a useful research tool for investigating retrograde amnesia. Clients who may be very similar on standard memory tests can differ markedly in their autobiographical memory performance. The test assesses the recall of facts from the client's own past life as well as their recall of specific incidents in their earlier life. Both types of memory are assessed across three broad time bands: childhood, early adult life, and recent facts/incidents. Thus it allows a measurement of the pattern of autobiographical memory deficit and the detection of any temporal gradient in retrograde amnesia. AMI enables the clinician to understand the nature of any autobiographical memory deficit observed and to focus therapy accordingly.
