Audience

This session supports all WIAT-III users in understanding how to effectively utilise and incorporate the Essay Composition subtest into their WIAT-III assessments. 

Course Description

This learning track focuses on effectively scoring and interpreting the Essay Composition subtest of the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test, Third Edition (WIAT-III). The course equips participants with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to administer, score, and interpret the subtest accurately and consistently. It also places the subtest within the broader context of the full WIAT-III assessment.

Although the primary focus is the Essay Composition subtest, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the WIAT-III as a whole by completing this micro-credential.

During this course, participants will:

Define the Purpose of the Essay Composition Subtest

• Understand the role of the Essay Composition subtest within the overall WIAT-III assessment.
• Recognise how the subtest evaluates writing skills, including content, grammar, organisation, and coherence.
• Identify key nuances in scoring and how these affect interpretation.

Explore the Marking and Scoring Process

• Analyse the key components assessed in the subtest (e.g., organisation, grammar, content depth, coherence).
• Apply the scoring framework, including raw scores, standard scores, percentiles, and their relationship to normative data.
• Use standardised grammar conventions when scoring responses.
• ​​​​​​​Interpret results using best practices to support informed decisions.

Identify Common Challenges in Scoring

• Recognise typical challenges encountered during scoring and interpretation.
• ​​​​​​​Implement strategies to resolve scoring ambiguities and maintain scoring accuracy and confidence.

By completing this course, participants will confidently be able to:

• Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the Essay Composition subtest, including its purpose within the WIAT-III assessment, the specific writing skills it measures (content, grammar, organisation, and coherence), and the key nuances involved in scoring and interpretation.
