Audience

This workshop is designed for allied health professionals who use, or are looking to incorporate, standardised assessments into their clinical practice. It is particularly valuable for clinicians involved in functional assessments, clinical reporting and funding applications across the NDIS and other practice settings.

Course Description

Choosing the right standardised assessment can strengthen your clinical reasoning, improve report quality and help justify recommendations across a range of practice settings. With hundreds of assessments available, knowing which tool to use and why can be just as important as understanding the results.

This practical workshop provides an overview of commonly used standardised assessment tools and the key considerations when selecting them. You'll explore concepts such as validity, reliability, assessment purpose, funding body expectations and reporting approaches before working through a range of commonly used assessments including the Vineland-3, ABAS-3, WHODAS 2.0, Sensory Profile, CIQ-R, Barthel Index, AFLS, CANS, LSP-16 and Lawton IADL Scale.

Rather than focusing on becoming accredited in individual assessments, this workshop helps you understand where each tool fits within Occupational Therapy practice and how assessment findings can be incorporated into functional reports to support sound clinical reasoning and evidence-based recommendations.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

• Describe the key features of standardised assessments and their role in Occupational Therapy practice
• Select appropriate standardised assessments based on client needs, clinical context and funding requirements
• Compare commonly used assessment tools, including their strengths, limitations and intended applications
• Understand key considerations when incorporating standardised assessment findings into functional reports and recommendations
• Apply assessment results to support clinical reasoning and evidence-based recommendations

Presenters

Lisa Natale

Lisa Natale is an Occupational Therapist with 24 years of experience in clinical and training roles. She is the Director of ActivOT Clearview, where she has managed a private practice since 2013, and a casual lecturer at Flinders University in Occupational Therapy and Disability & Development Education.

Lisa provides peer training in assistive technology, home modifications, functional assessments, and report writing. She is recognised for her strong focus on processes, policies, and procedures that promote effective and ethical practice.
