Audience

This workshop is designed for Occupational Therapists who assess and report on functional capacity for adult participants within the NDIS. It is also relevant for support coordinators, case managers, and clinicians involved in preparing evidence for funding applications, reviews, and appeals.

Course Description

High-quality functional capacity assessments are essential to ensuring NDIS participants receive appropriate funded supports. This workshop provides Occupational Therapists with a structured, practical framework for assessing function, gathering evidence, and writing reports that align with NDIS expectations.

Through case examples and hands-on guidance, participants will learn how to explore functional capacity across self-care, self-management, mobility, communication, and community participation. The session demonstrates how to integrate findings from observation, interviews, task analysis, standardised assessments, and other evidence sources to build a comprehensive understanding of client strengths and support needs.

By the end of this training, you’ll have the knowledge and confidence to complete functional capacity assessments that are robust, person-centred, and meet NDIS reporting requirements. Whether you’re new to functional assessments or seeking to refine your approach, this workshop offers clear, practical strategies to strengthen clinical reasoning and enhance report quality.

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

• Define functional capacity in the context of the NDIS.
• Recognise when and why a Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA) may be required.
• Identify key components of a comprehensive assessment, including referral triage, information gathering, observation, task analysis, and standardised measures.
• Apply a structured, whole-of-person approach to exploring functional status, self-care, self-management, and community access.
• Integrate findings from multiple evidence sources to form a clear, defensible picture of client needs and strengths.
• Understand the core requirements for an FCA report within the NDIS context.

Veronica Sarunic is an Occupational Therapist with almost 30 years of experience across mental health, neurorehabilitation and medico-legal practice. Over the past decade, she has focused her clinical expertise on supporting children and young adults, developing a strong reputation in paediatric functional capacity assessment.

Veronica is passionate about building competency among OTs working in paediatrics and regularly delivers training to equip clinicians with the knowledge and skills to produce high-quality, evidence-based reports that make a genuine difference for children and their families.
